At 24.5 miles long Loch Lomond is Britain's largest inland stretch of water by surface area. The Loch is nestled in the heart of Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park, only 20 miles north of Glasgow.
Surrounded by mountains, wildlife, forests and glens Loch Lomond is the perfect place to visit for an open water swim this summer.Last year 2,500 competitors took part in the various distances throughout the day. Research shows that over half the competitors come from outside Scotland, each bringing 2 – 3 people along to cheer them on. Of those that travel from outside Scotland, the majority spend 2 – 3 nights in the area bringing a welcome economic boost. This year the organisers are expecting closer to 3,000 competitors as the popularity of the location attracts more and more people to the event, with the organisers adding a new 5km distance to the line-up. The event generates great media coverage for the National Park area and brings a new market to the region.
Having seen the success of this event, organisers of the European Swimming Championships in 2018 have announced Loch Lomond as the venue for the open water section of the competition. The championships will have live television coverage streamed across Europe, further showcasing Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park as a sublime visitor destination. So if you are looking for the ultimate in revitalising weekends, there is no better way than to spend it in the open water of Loch Lomond and then on its fun-filled shores. Enjoy various tasty opportunities whilst shopping in the impressive retail outlets, and why not watch some world-class open water swimmers in action too.
