The distinctive roundhouse sitting over stunning Loch Tay is one of the most recognisable sights in Perthshire, and draws on remarkable discoveries made by divers from the Scottish Trust for Underwater Archaeology during their underwater excavations of Oakbank Crannog at nearby Fearnan.
Each year the Crannog Centre offers a new events programme designed to stimulate interest from local residents as well as visitors, and to broaden the use of the Crannog, which provides an excellent venue for a wide range of activities under the banner of education and cultural tourism. The events are linked or inspired by ancient traditions, or based on discoveries underwater during crannog investigations in Loch Tay. They include experimental archaeology projects, music, ancient technologies, and traditional crafts.
Thursday July 21st 10.30 - 4.30
The Iron Age Gourmet day is one of the Crannog Centre’s most popular events of the year. Totally unique and inspired by discoveries at the 2,500 year old Oakbank Crannog, you wont find a menu like this anywhere else. Tasty, nutritious and healthy foods prepared and cooked as our ancients did.
All events include museum exhibits, talks around a log-fire in the Crannog roundhouse, demonstrations and hands-on experience of ancient crafts and technologies.
There was no kitchen in the Crannog, or at least not one that we would recognise today, but the Loch-dwellers managed with what they had producing fabulous down-to-earth nutritional food.
The Iron age Gourmet day is one of the most popular events so dont miss out on cookery demonstrations like you've never seen before: fish baked in clay stuffed with foraged herbs; fish smoked over an open fire; stews and soups using fresh local produce; breads, spreads and jams; locally-sourced spit-roast lamb, wild boar sausages to toast over an open fire and more.
Based on finds at the 2,500 year old Oakbank Crannog, our Gourmet Day proves that the ancient Loch-Dwellers were inventive, resourceful people who made the most of what was around them.
If you are here in central Scotland this coming Thursday, why not visit the Scottish Crannog Centre for the experience of the Gourmet Day which promises to provide a great family day out. Loch Tay is within easy travelling distance of any of our self-catering holiday cottages.
